“It is quite possible that an animal has spoken to me and that I didn't catch the remark because I wasn't paying attention.”
E.B. White, Charlotte's Web

The Author: Pat Mullarkey comes from Oregon USA and works as an English teacher with English Tarragona. She has a master's in Children's Literature from the Eastern Michigan University.

“The first time I explored the Catedral Basilica de Tarragona I came across a courtyard with cats. Suddenly, I heard a loud noise and looked up. There perched high on a ledge was an orange and white cat. I laughed at the authority in her meows. Yet, I paid attention and heeded the request to tell Calçot’s story.

I hope readers will enjoy these tales, historias, cuentos that follow this orange and white (and sometimes bossy) cat as she walks through the plaças and sidestreets of the old section, La Parte Alta.” - Pat Mullarkey

"From the moment I was approached with the idea for the book, I found it a real challenge to think how to visually express the story. Remembering my own childhood, when books took me to a land of fantasy and adventure, helped and I was keen to achieve the same effect with this book. I spent some months following cats around the old town to observe how they acted, and to see if they really do solve mysteries as in the book!

To produce the illustrations, I decided to combine two painting techniques; watercolour for the backgrounds and chalk for the characters. In this way it became easier to position the characters in the scenes, just the way the book indicated." - Paúl Sánchez

At English Tarragona, we're always looking for different ways to introduce English into the lives of our students. It's for this reason that we organise our weekly English Corner, we provide dance classes for children, cultural excursions and photography and literature workshops. With this philosophy of doing things differently we decided to create this book.

Included with the book is a translation in Spanish or Catalan so that parents who don't know English can understand and enjoy the story with their children.
